We took the LIRR Port Washington train to Douglaston. Head South from the station on 235th St. and continue on Douglaston Parkway. Right after Douglaston Pkwy merges with 235 St. is a trail head for Joseph B. Hellman Overlook. You can take this trail and follow the split to the south and it will take you to Northern Blvd. If you don't take this trail then continue on Douglaston Pkwy to the traffic light and turn right on Northern Blvd. You will want to be on the south side of Northern Blvd.
The Alley Pond Environmental Center had been under construction and we did not know if the construction was completed or if the trail could be accessed if the construction was in progress. We passed the first yellow trail head and crossed the Little Neck Bridge. The Alley Pond Environmental Center was under construction but you can access the trail from the west side fence. We were able to hike about a quarter mile or so of the trail before it was too overgrown to continue and double backed. We then entered the trail head on the east side of the Little Neck Bridge. We were able to hike this all the way to the southern point and then the trail was overgrown again and we doubled back.
